21 Sexiest Female Super Heroes

Over the last five decades, women have been taking on more protagonist roles in comics, cartoons, movies and, well… life. Since men are very visual creatures it is only natural to make these women very appealing to them. If comic books were jammed with Super Hero ugly chicks, guys would probably never buy them. Slap a sexy woman in charge on the cover of an Xmen comic and there is one more reason for men to grab a copy.

Time has given guys many beautiful female super heroes to fantasize about, so the following document I present you twenty one female super heroes you most likely wouldn’t kick out of bed.

21. Silk Spectre

Real name: Laurie Jupiter

Laurie Jupiter is not actually the first Silk Spectre, but the second – the first being her mother, Sally. Although quite liberal minded, Silk Spectre II did not originally want to be a superhero, but was forced down that path by her mother. Not wanting to be a superhero did not stop Silk Spectre II from becoming well trained, however, and she has proven herself to be an extremely capable and skilled vigilante.

*Note, this isn’t the best picture of Silk Spectre, but if you have seen the recent Watchmen movie you will know WHY she is listed (hint: SHES HOT!)

Silk Spectre

20. She-Ra

Real Name: Princess Adora
Kidnapped by the Horde as a baby to do the Horde’s bidding, Princess Adora does not realize her birthright as She-Ra until she encounters her brother He-Man in an alternate dimension, where he was captured. The siblings do not recognize each other, as He-Man’s mind (and all those in his dimension home) had been erased of her memory. The sword that He-Man carries with him, however, draws Adora to it. Seeing the Sorceress in the sword (one of the only people that still hold memory of her as a child), Adora recognizes her heritage and frees He-Man from captivity. Finally able to go home, Adora realizes that her rightful place is with the people she has come to know under the Horde’s rule and returns to join the cause in freeing them.

Of all the super heroes that exist, I’ve seen just about all of them as Halloween costumes, but I’ve never seen She-Ra. Maybe I was more focused on the candy instead of the costumes back in the 80’s to have actually noticed. If you are a costume manufacturer out there, please make us a She-Ra costume!

She-Ra

19. Power Girl

Real Name: Karen Starr
Another Kryptonian, the extremely athletic Power Girl possesses the power of increased stamina, strength, x ray vision and super speed. Although she left Krypton at roughly the same time Superman did, she took much longer to arrive on earth. Power Girl was once a member of the Birds of Prey, but leaves the group when a rift grows between her and the Oracle, the Birds of Prey leader. A formidable opponent in her own right, Power Girl is a critical part of the Justice Society, where she becomes chairwoman after the former leader retires.

Power Girl

18. Rogue

Real Name: Anna Marie
A self proclaimed southern belle, Anna Marie is a mutant and a member of Charles Xavier’s X-Men. Better known to the mutant community as “Rogue”, she has the ability to absorb thoughts, memories, knowledge, and superhuman powers. Unfortunately, this leaves her strictly, “look but don’t touch”, since prolonged skin to skin contact usually leaves the other person severely weakened, in a coma or dead. For this reason, Rogue is most often seen in a neck to toe, skin tight and gloved body suit, as so to minimize the chances of inadvertently harming someone.

Rogue

17. Buffy Summers

A former cheerleader, Buffy Summers is a Slayer, one of The Chosen, “She who spends a lot of time in graveyards”. Her superpowers – enhanced strength, speed and agility – were given to her when the previous slayer died, ‘activating’ the innate ability in her. While Slayers don’t normally last very long, Buffy has survived (and stopped) several apocalypses, defeated dozens of truly terrifying demons, and has even survived death (twice). She is a unique Slayer, as her rebellious nature and kind heart has helped her to forge lifetime friendships, something that is key in helping her survive and rise above the challenges that the underworld has thrown her (not to mention her keen fashion sense and sense of humour). “She saved the world. A lot.”

Buffy Summers

16. Claire Bennett

This super powered cheerleader was made famous with one phrase: “Save the cheerleader, save the world”. She led a fairly normal life in Odessa, Texas, before her abilities attracted attention that put her – and her family – in mortal danger. Adopted at a very young age under mysterious circumstances, this high school cheerleader has the evolved human ability to heal at an extremely rapid pace – even from fatal wounds.

Claire Bennett

15. Shadow Cat

Real Name: Kitty Pryde
Kitty Pryde is a mutant who discovers her mutant abilities as a young teenager. Originally approached by two warring factions of the mutant war, she chose to join up with the X-Men and was up to that point the youngest member to join. Kitty, or Shadow Cat as she later becomes, possesses the ability to ‘phase’ through solid objects by altering the speed at which her atoms move. In addition to her mutant powers, Kitty is also an extremely adept at applied sciences, and possesses skill in hand to hand combat.

Kitty Pride

14. Ms. Marvel

Real Name: Carol Danvers
Carol Danvers was a normal teenage girl who joined the Air Force upon graduating from high school. However, after being caught in an explosion caused by an extra-terrestrial device (from the Kree species), she gains the superhuman that enable her to become Ms. Marvel. After surviving a series of struggles with alien races, alternate dimensions, and being attacked by the X-Men Rogue, Carol Danvers finally joins, and leads, the Avengers.

Ms Marvel

13.Storm

Real Name: Ororo Munroe
Ororo Munroe was born in New York City to a Kenyan tribal princess and an American photojournalist, David Munroe. Orphaned at a young age in Cairo, Egypt, Ororo, who later becomes known as Storm, has the ability to control the weather. As a child, Storm learns the art of thievery, and later becomes a rain goddess to an African tribe in the Serengeti. It is at this point that she is recruited by Professor Charles Xavier to the X-Men. Although she becomes a strong leader for the X-Men, Storm has been portrayed as having trouble adjusting to western culture (for example, not understanding why she needs to cover herself in a public bath), and eventually leaves the X-Men when she marries Black Panther, King of Wakanda, and becomes Queen.

Storm

12. Invisible Woman

Real Name: Sue Storm
Sue Storm was on a space mission when she was exposed to high amounts of cosmic radiation that gave her superhuman powers. Sue is able to create force fields around her, and anyone near here, as well as bend light particles around her so that she becomes “invisible”. Although Sue likely has the hardest time of all the Fantastic Four coping with her powers, she becomes instrumental to the team and steps in as leader in times where Mr. Fantastic (Reed Richards) is unable to do so himself.

Invisible Woman Sue Storm

11. Wonder Woman

Real Name: Diana Prince
Particularly known for her beauty (and her red, blue and gold outfit), Diana Prince, AKA Wonder Woman, came from a matriarchal tribe of Greek Amazons, and was charged with bringing peace to the world of man. Possessing the powers of super strength, enhanced speed, flight, and the ability to force people to tell the truth (via her magic ‘lasso’), Wonder Woman remains one of the most sexist and iconic super heroines of all time.

Wonder Woman

10. BatWoman

Real Name: Kate Kane
Although Batwoman lacks any real superpowers, like Batman, she is a skilled fighter and uses technology to enhance her physical combat. As a wealthy Jewish Gotham socialite, Kate Kane’s fortune rivals that of Bruce Wayne. Kate Kane is perhaps one of the most controversial female superheroes in existence, as it was recently revealed that she is a lesbian.

Bat Woman

9. Catwoman

Real Name: Selena Kyle
Usually pictured as donning a skin tight, black leather outfit, this feline is one of Bruce Wayne’s on again, off again girlfriends. A ferocious fighter and thief, Selena Kyle was originally a flight stewardess with amnesia, but more recent storylines give her a grittier origin, revealing her past as a tough-as-nails dominatrix/prostitute who loves cats.

CatWoman

8. Elektra

Real Name: Elektra Natchios
Elektra Natchios is a rare superhero in that her ‘powers’ are mainly attributed to her extreme skill as a ninja. While Elektra does not have any super abilities, she has naturally enhanced her physical form to the point that her movement and reflexes seem superhuman. Her weapon of choice tends to be the Japanese Sai, but she is also skilled in hand to hand combat, use of the katana, throwing knives, and daggers. Although she is in love with Matt Murdock (also known as Daredevil) her tendency toward violence and her lust for the mercenary lifestyle keep the two apart.

Elektra

7. Black Widow

Real Name: Natasha Romanoff
Originally a soviet spy, Natasha Romanoff (or Natalia Romanova) eventually defects to the United States after learning secrets regarding her country’s past, her involvement in it and how they manipulated her. She is well trained as an assassin and is an accomplished fighter, as well as a weapons specialist. Her form fitting black suit often comes well equipped and allows her to climb walls. Although she technically does not have a superpower, her special training combined with her adept use of the latest in cutting edge technology leaves her as a force to be reckoned with.

* Watch for Scarlett Johansson playing Black Widow in the upcoming Iron Man 2

Black Widow

6. Spider-Woman

Real Name: Jessica Drew
Although not the only Spider-Woman, Jessica Drew was given permission from Spider-Man to cop his name, and so is largely considered the “official” one. After her parent’s mysterious disappearance as a child, Jessica was recruited into an elite crime syndicate, Hydra, where she was trained as a highly skilled assassin. Later realizing that the life that she led with Hydra was a lie, Jessica defects and becomes a double agent for Nick Fury, where she joins the Avengers and uses her powers of seduction for the greater good.

Spider-Woman

5. Scarlet Witch

Real Name: Wanda Maximoff
Sister to Quicksilver and daughter of Magneto, Wanda Maximoff comes from an extremely powerful family. She is often considered one of the most powerful mutants in history, as her ability manipulates probability and allows her to alter realities. She is also depicted as one of the most unstable mutants, as her dangerous lifestyle and many heartbreaks leave Wanda in constant emotional turmoil. Her innocent nature gives her the best of intentions, although it’s often left to interpretation if the results are positive or negative.

Scarlet Witch

4. Marvel Girl/Phoenix

Real Name: Jean Grey
Jean Grey is perhaps best known for being one of the greatest telepathic minds in the Marvel Universe. Jean first manifests her mutant power as a young girl, telepathically linking with a friend as she dies. While the shock leaves Jean in a coma, it also brings Professor X into her life, who suppresses part of her power so that she could learn how to grow into it ‘naturally’. With this, Jean becomes the first female “X-Man” and takes on the name Marvel Girl. Later however, while the X-Men are attempting to come back to earth from space on a damaged ship, intense radiation from landing causes this block to break, and Jean emerges as the Phoenix.

Phoenix - Jean Grey

3.Lara Croft

Although not a superhero, Lara Croft’s love for adventuring and danger put her in many precarious situations. She is often seen as a headstrong and extremely confident, and also extremely fun-loving – almost an adrenaline junkie. She is also of British decent and speaks with a strong English accent. Lara is extremely proficient with almost any type of gun, and is almost always pictured as duel-wielding matching handguns.

Lara Croft

2. SuperGirl

Real Name: Kara Zor-El, Kara Kent
Kara Zor-El came to adopt the last name of her cousin, Clark Kent. Although technically older than her cousin, her ship was caught in a kryptonite meteor and was suspended for years until she finally managed to make it to earth. Now, she has all the abilities that Superman does – super human strength, speed, stamina, super vision and lung capacity. In fact, observers note that in many cases, Super Girl actually appears to be stronger and more powerful than Superman himself.

Supergirl

1. Emma Frost

Real Name: Emma Frost
Emma Frost becomes the leader of the elite Hellfire Club after discovering a plot to wipe out all mutants by former leaders. Defeating them, she is known as the White Queen, due to her frosty and often distant demeanour, and is reported to be one of the most powerful telepaths on the planet. After surviving a genocidal attack on her home with the help of the famous mutant group the X-Men, Emma joins the X-Men and eventually becomes their leader after Charles Xavier steps down as their head.

Interesting Facts About Hydrogen (H)

6 Hydrogen (H) Facts

Hydrogen, the most basic of all chemical elements, contains only one proton, 1 electron and no neutorns. Hydrogen is actually the oldest element in the universe, being formed between 3 and 20 minutes after the Big Bang. These, of course, are only a couple of the interesting facts about hydrogen.

1. Hydrogen is the most abundant chemical element in the universe, consisting of about 75% the universe’s elemental mass.

2. Elemental hydrogen is actually relatively rare on Earth, and so is produced from hydrocarbons, a chemical compound composed entirely of hydrogen and carbon. This hydrogen is used mostly for the production of gasoline and ammonia.

3. Hydrogen is extreamly flammable and will automatically ignite at a temperature of 560 °C. When burned, hydrogen combines with oxygen to form water (H2O) and 286 kJ/mol of energy. In a pure hydrogen/oxygen environment the flame produced burns in the ultraviolet color range, meaning you cannot see the flame with your naked eye. This combustion is used to propel the Space Shuttle into space.

4. Hydrogen has three naturally occuring isotopes, all three of them named, and is the only element to have different names in use today. 1H, called protium is the most abundant at more than 99.98%. 2H, named deuterium, thought to be all formed at the Big Bang. 3H, called tritrium, is radioactive, and decays into helium-3 with a half-life of 12.34 years.

8 Drinks That Will Make You Fat

8 Extremely Fattening Drinks

There are not many people who would select water over a selection of other beverages, the problem is, most of these same people don’t realize the volume of calories they are putting in their bodies when they consume these products. Even freshly squeezed juices are very calorie dense. If you are pounding back any of these drinks on a regular basis, cutting them out could do wonders for your waste line without even adding in any exercise!

This list will be from the least calorie dense drinks all the way up to the super calorie dense options. And since I am such a nice guy, I’m even going to suggest a few low calorie alternatives to help give you something to sip on over the day.

7-11 Slurpee8. 7-11 Cola Slurpee

This one seems almost obvious, although, I was shocked to see it this low on the list when compared to some of the other popular drinks.

Slurpee Nutritional Info
Oz: 24
Calories: 210
Fat: 0g
Carbs: 53.9g
Protein:
Sugar: 53.9g
Calories Per oz: 8.75

Alternatives to Slurpees
While I personally love a Slurpee on a hot summers day, one alternative is a home made calorie free Slurpee. Take your blender, mix in roughly 1/2 cup of pre made crystal light, and then add roughly half a tray of ice cubes, more if you want it slushier. Blend the concoction up for a calorie free Slurpee.

7. Pepsi Cola/Coca Cola

Pepsi CanAnother obvious one near the top of the list is sugar packed sodas such as Coke or Pepsi. Your average 12oz serving has roughly 150 calories! If you drink three cans a day, that’s 160200 calories a year which is roughly 45 lbs of PURE FAT!

Pepsi Nutritional Info:
Oz: 12
Calories: 150
Fat: 0g
Carbs: 42g
Protein:
Sugar: 42g
Calories Per oz: 12.50

Alternatives to Pepsi/Coke & Sodas
This is actually a really easy fix if you are willing to make a bit of a change. Switch from Pepsi to Diet Pepsi. The taste might not be that pleasing at first, but after a few weeks, you don’t even notice the aftertaste any more. I personally actually prefer diet sodas over regular these days. If you drink diet soda, you are 100% reducing these drink calories from your diet.

Fresh Orange Juice6. Fresh Orange Juice

Yes, you are reading this correctly. Juices are jam packed full of calories whether you are drinking apple juice, orange juice or grape juice, they all contain a ton of sugar and a ton of unnecessary calories. If you really just want some vitamin C, take a supplement or eat an actual orange and get some of the fiber to go along with it.

Fresh Orange Juice Nutrition Info
Oz: 12
Calories: 170

Carbs: 39.2g
Protein: 2.6
Sugar: 31.7g

Fresh Juice Alternatives:
If you are drinking juice for Vitamins, eat the fruit and get some of the benefits of the fiber. If you are just looking for something that has some flavor, mix up some Crystal Light and enjoy a tasty calorie free drink.

Gatorade5. Gatorade

If Gatorade is good for athletes it has got to be good for me right? WRONG! Gatorade was developed to help athletes quickly replenish depleted energy sources and as a result is jam packed full of sugar as well as calories. Unless you are performing at a very high level athletically, drinking Gatorade is only going to build your spare tire around your waste.

Gatorade Nutrition Info:

Carbs: 39.2g
Protein: 2.6
Sugar: 31.7g
Calories Per oz: 25.83

Gatorade Alternatives:
If you really want to drink a sports drink, pickup one of Gatorade’s new G2 sports drinks. It is a low calorie alternative and won’t turn you into an overweight wannabe athlete.

Starbucks Frappuccino Creme4. Starbucks Mint Chocolaty Chip Frappuccino® blended creme with Chocolate Whipped Cream

Let’s face it, you shouldn’t be drinking Starbucks Frappuccino’s if you are trying to watch your waste line. They are so packed full of calories, you could easily gain a pound a week by drinking a Venti every day! One Frapp stands out in the crowd for being the ultimate weight gainer and that is the ‘Mint Chocolaty Chip Frappuccino blended crème with Chocolate Whipped Cream’; try saying that 5 times! This drink is a behemoth with 680 calories in a single 24oz serving. That is an astounding 28.33 calories per oz. If you are planning on dressing up as Santa Clause this winter and don’t want to stuff your pants with pillows, this is definitely the daily beverage for you.

Starbucks Mint Chocolaty Chip Frappuccino® blended creme with Chocolate Whipped Cream Nutrition Info
Oz: 24
Calories: 680
Fat: 21g
Carbs: 115g
Protein: 18
Sugar: 93g

Frappuccino Alternatives:
If you are really feeling the urge to get a blended Frapp from Starbucks, first step is to look at the ‘light’ section. The next step is to select the Espresso Frappuccino® Light Blended Coffee. A Venti (24oz) serving still has 150 calories, but that is substantially better than its Mint Chocolaty companion. For those who care, the Espresso Frappuccino® Light Blended Coffee packs 6.25 calories per oz.

7-11 Cafe Cooler3. 7-11 French Vanilla Café Cooler

7-11 got a little upset when Starbucks started stealing their grown up Slurpee customers who wanted blended coffee. So what did they do? They came up with Coffee Slurpees to stir up the competition. Unlucky for us though, these Slurpees come packed with nearly four times the calories of a traditional Slurpee. Check out the nutritional information on these tasty morsels.

7-11 French Vanilla Café Cooler Nutrition Info:
Oz: 20
Calories: 634
Fat: 27g
Carbs: 97g
Protein: 1.6
Sugar: 97g
Calories Per oz: 31.70

French Vanilla Café Alternatives:
Honestly, if you have to buy something from 7-11 to replace your French Vanilla Café Cooler, I would recommend grabbing a cup of coffee, toss a bit of skim milk and some sugar free Vanilla syrup in it. Run over to the Big Gulp machine and toss a few ice cubes in your cup to cool it down and make a chilled beverage. Aside from that, any of the café coolers are pretty much going to turn you into a fat air balloon.

McDonald's Triple Thick Shake2. McDonald’s Chocolate Triple Thick® Shake

Leave it to McDonalds to have the second most fattening drink that I have ever seen. If you’ve ever tasted their Chocolate Triple Thick Shake, you would know instantly that there is no way something with so much creamy tasty flavor could ever be good for you. This calorie behemoth could help you pack on as much as two pounds of fat a week when combined with your normal diet. Pretty impressive huh?

Chocolate Triple Thick® Shake Nutrition Info:
Oz: 32
Calories: 1160
Fat: 27g
Carbs: 203g
Protein: 27
Sugar: 168g
Calories Per oz: 36.25

Chocolate Triple Thick® Shake Alternatives:
If you really want to drink a Chocolate milk shake, you are looking at a calorie dense beverage no matter what way you ‘shake’ it. If you want to make something that is at least somewhat healthy for you, blend 1/2 cup skim milk with 2 scoops chocolate whey protein and half a tray of ice. It will taste like a chocolate milk shake with way less sugar, but you still can’t avoid the calories.

Bubble Tea1. Bubble Tea with Milk and Tapioca Pearls

Bubble Tea is an Asian drink that has many variations these days. The original Bubble Tea came from Taiwan and was a combination of Black tea, condensed milk, honey and pearls (tapioca balls). These days, the black tea and condensed milk can be substituted with fruity teas or milky fruit teas, all of which are jam packed with gut producing calories. A standard Bubble Tea with milk and pearls contains roughly 510 calories in just a 12 oz serving. If you just broke out your calculator you would now know that Bubble tea can contain 42.50 calories per oz! What does that mean for you? It means that Bubble Tea is a one way ticket to Obesity Boulevard.

Bubble Tea with Milk and Tapioca Pearls Nutritional Info:
Oz: 12
Calories: 510
Fat: 20.4g
Carbs: 79.05g
Protein: .6
Sugar: ?g
Calories Per oz: 42.50

Bubble Tea Alternatives:
Alright, this one you are going to have to suck up and just stop drinking. There is absolutely no reason why you need to eat Tapioca balls and condensed milk on a daily basis. Hit up your grocery store and grab a couple boxes of black and green tea. Not only will it save your health, it will also save you some money.

There are more than 360 species split across 8 orders of sharks. Some sharks are predators and some are perfectly safe. Some sharks are large and some sharks are small, but humans in general are fascinated with size and because of this I have compiled a list of the 10 largest sharks in the world.

The 7 Grossest Creatures To Ever Wash Up On Shore

Ontario(62487)

Ahh, a romantic stroll on the beach. There’s moonlight, a warm breeze, soft waves lapping at your toes and a putrid, rotting carcass that smells so bad you can’t help but throw up. So. Romantic.

For some people, this is an unfortunate reality. All around the world, unlucky beachgoers have stumbled across the bodies of mysterious creatures that no one can explain. Some look like they’ve been rotting for 5 centuries, while others appear to be the offspring of an everyday farm animal and something you’d see from a whale watching boat. Whatever they are, they’ve been baffling scientists for decades. And they’re gross.

Montauk Monster

Montauk

Credit: Wikipedia

Two women found this lovely carcass on a beach in Montauk, New York. It’s rumoured to be a hoax because the body was conveniently never made available for testing (it’s supposedly rotting in an unnamed person’s backyard), but still. It’s cool. Those who believe it’s real think it’s a diseased dog (weird), a raccoon (not as weird) or a sea turtle (really weird). This is what a sea turtle looks like, in case you’ve forgotten. Please compare.

Panama Creature

A year later, this tasty treat was discovered in Panama. According to the rumor, two kids saw it hanging out near a cave and beat it to death. That’s a big fat lie because an autopsy determined it was the decomposed, bloated body of a hairless sloth. Please notice the resemblence (especially the claws):

Ontario Beast

In the town of Kitchenuhmaykoosib, Ontario, two ladies were out for a pleasant morning hike when their dog decided to fetch the grossest thing possible. He dropped this weird beast at their feet and they, along with the rest of the world, had no clue what it was. Despite its resemblance to the offspring of a rat and a boar, most think it’s a raccoon. Whatever it is, it has lovely fur.

New Zealand Dinosaur

New Zealand(62478)

Credit: gennet.org

While trawling for mackerel off the coast of New Zealand, a Japanese fishing boat pulled up something that was definitely not mackerel. According to a guy from Japan’s National Science Museum, it’s not a whale, a fish or even a mammal, so by default it’s a dinosaur. A plesiosaur, to be exact. How can a dinosaur stay somewhat preserved for hundreds of millions of years, you ask? Well, it might have been mummified on the bottom of the sea and eventually floated to the surface. Or, it might have been alive the whole time. Too bad we’ll never know because the fishermen threw it back in the ocean. But either way, it does look a heck of a lot like this artist’s representation of a plesiosaur:

Scotland Mystery

Scotland

Credit: dailymail.co.uk

A woman out for a beach walk (typical scenario for finding yucky creatures, it seems) stumbled upon this 30-foot skeleton in Aberdeen, Scotland. Most people thought it was some generic Nessie-type monster, while others believe it’s a plain old pilot whale. Decide for yourself:

Russian Sheep Shark Thing

Russia(62482)

Russian soldiers found this tasty treat in the most eastern part of Russian. At first glance it looks like an alligator, but it actually has skin with fur, and what appears to be sheep’s head. Like most monsters, the corpse was whisked away for “in-depth studies” and nobody has heard anything since.

China Monster

China(62483)

This gnarly sea monster washed up on the shores of China in June 2011. It’s 55 feet long, and despite its deflated appearance, it still weighed in at 4.5 tons (i doubt they flopped it on a scale, so I’m not sure how they arrived at that number). The main theory is that it’s a coelencanth, which is more commonly known as a dino-fish. Coelencanths were thought to have gone extinct 65 million years ago but were rediscovered—alive—in 1938. Actually, its fossils were discovered well before a live specimen!

12 Most Dangerous Tourist Attractions in the World!

Most Dangerous Tourist Destinations

If you are looking for some great destinations for your next vacation, there are a number of dangerous tourist attractions that you may want to avoid. Many of these locations have been made into tourist attractions in order to generate an income for the location, however due to the inherant danger of these locations, it is probably in your best intrest to avoid them. Here are twelve of the most dangerous tourist attractions in the world.

12. Chernobyl Tours

Chernobyl

The site of a nuclear disaster in 1986 near Prypiat, Ukraine, the Chernobyl nuclear power plant offers tours for those who are curious about the disaster and want to see the site in person. The management of the Chernobyl tours assure you that any remaining radiation levels from the disaster are too small to harm your health, but the danger may not just be toward your physical health. After taking the tour, you may find that you have been changed inside as well.

11. Death Road Tour

Known as the most dangerous road in the world, the 60 kilometer expanse of highway running between La Paz and Coroico, Bolivia has claimed numerous lives. The North Yungas Road is as small as 10 feet across in some locations and has no guardrails to keep you from falling over the edge. If you have the misfortune of going over the edge, your vehicle would come to rest after falling more than 2,000 feet to the bottom off the canyon.

10. Bungee Jumping into an Active Volcano

It might not be the smartest thing to do, but it will definitely get your blood pumping. For $10,000, you can bungee jump from a helicopter into the mouth of Chile’s Villarrica volcano. The volcano is active with pools of white-hot lava bubbling below where you will come within 213 meters of the pool of molten lava.

9. Swim in Shark Infested Waters

When you really want to test what you are made from, try swimming in shark infested waters. The New Smyrna Beach in Florida is known as the shark capital of the world. Just an hour northeast of Orlando, New Smyrna Beach features inviting white sandy beaches, but beware. Just a short distance into the water, danger awaits.

8. Volcano Helicopter Tours

Seeing the inside of an active volcano from a helicopter sounds like a great idea, but it can also be a deadly one. Many people have taken the risk by touring the inside of active volcanoes on the Hawaiian Islands with Hawaiian Island helicopter tours. The tours have not always come out as planned, with over 30 people having died from helicopter crashes during the tours since 1995.

7. Climbing Mont Blanc on the French/Italian Border

Climbing Mt Blanc

Mountain climbing is a dangerous sport anyway, but attempting to climb Mont Blanc is to tempt death itself. The mountain reaches a peak of 4,877 meters with wind gusts reaching 95 kilometers near the top. If the extreme temperatures dont get you, the wind will. There were more than 50 people who died on the mountain in 2008 alone.

6. Swimming with the Jellyfish

Swimming with Jelly Fish

The greatest predator in Australia is not a shark, a snake or even a crocodile. It’s a box jellyfish. Located on the Northern coastline of Australia near the mouth of the rivers, the box jellyfish seems harmless, but has killed more people than all other deadly Australian animals combined.

5. Cliff Jumping at Bash Bish Falls

The Bash Bish Falls in Massachusetts are very beautiful and a great place to take pictures, but the Falls harbor some hidden dangers. The Bash Bish Falls look great, but the edges of the cliffs have claimed many lives with crumbling ledges as well as pools that are shallower than expected.

4. Climbing Mount Cook in New Zealand

Climbing Mount Cook in New Zealand

The Mount Cook National Park in New Zealand looks like an idyllic place to climb. But the park is prone to avalanches and conditions that prevent rescuers from reaching you when you are in danger. The park has claimed many would-be and professional climbers.

3. Beautiful yet Deadly Destination

Tsunami Warning

One of the most inviting destinations is also one of the most deadly. The island of Vanuatu has fantastic South Pacific beaches, that often experience tsunamis from earthquakes as well as cyclones and active volcanoes.

2. Tobaggan on an Active Volcano

Tobaggan down the outside of the Cerro Negro volcano in Nicaragua. The volcano erupted in 1999, but the tobaggan guide swears he will know if it is about to erupt. You will still have to deal with gravel burns when you travel at 68 km an hour over the rocky terrain.

1. Walk the Plank at Mt. Huashan China

Hike along the face of Mount Huashan in China, thousands of feet in the air as you walk over wooden 12 inch wide planks tied into the face of the cliffs. This is definitely not a family friendly activity.  It doesn’t sound that bad, but there are NO hand rails, and the only thing keeping you on the side of the mountain is a safety harness, if you so choose to buy one. If you plan on checking out Mt. Huashan, I’ve got a simple travel tip for you.  Get some good hiking shoes and watch your step!

Top 10 Unrequited Love Songs

What is Unrequited Love?

Why does it makes a great song?

Love is a many splendid thing…unless it is unrequited love. Having feelings for someone who does not reciprocate them is one of the worst feelings we can experience. We yearn for the love of another, yet this person does not feel the same way towards us. It is the unkindest cut of all and one that causes both emotional, and even physical, pain.

Webster Merriam defines the word unrequited as “not shared or returned in kind.” Synonyms for this word include:

  • Unreciprocated
  • Vain
  • Rejected
  • Unsatisfied

Top 10 Unrequited Love Songs

Yes, all of these words explain the pain of loving someone who does not feel the same way about you.

Unrequited love can be one of two forms.

The first is when you have feelings for someone, but the other person has absolutely no idea about how you feel. You can go around pining for this person, hoping that some day he or she will notice that you are alive and come to their senses that they love you as well.

This problem is easily solved by asking the person out or sharing how you feel. While you may not get the answer you are hoping for, it can put an end to the yearing so you can move on with your life. This leads to the other kind of unreciprocated affection.

Loving someone who knows how you feel, but does not return those same feelings, is an entirely different kind of heartache. You know for a fact that this person does not have the same passion for you because he or she has made it clear to you. It is a one sided kind of love.

Unrequited love, for all of the pain and suffering it causes, has created some pretty amazing songs. It touches people because we have all experienced this in our lives.

While this is by no means a complete list, here are my top 10 songs about unrequited love.

Rick Springfield Jessie’s Girl

Working Class Dog 1981

In the early 1980’s Rick Springfield became a household name as Dr. Noah Drake on the ABC soap opera General Hospital. He parlayed that fame to a very successful recording career.  Although he had a number of successful albums, his only #1 song was Jessie’s Girl.

In the song, written by Rick Springfield, he sings:

Jessie is friend,

Yeah I know he’s been a good friend of mine.

But lately something’s changed that ain’t hard to define,

Jessie’s got himself a girl and I want to make her mine.

This song was actually based on a true story of Rick’s unrequited love for a woman whose name he does not know. He was taking an art class in Pasadena with a man named Gary and his girlfriend. Rick wanted the girl but she was not interested.

Years later, Oprah tried to track them down, but the owner of the stained glass art studio, but he had died two years prior. Another interesting fact is that he changed the name to Jessie because “Gary did to sound right.”

I Love This Video!

Is She Really Going Out With Him? Joe Jackson

Look Sharp! 1979

When we are in love with someone who does not love us back, and then we see them with someone else, it is like a stab right to the heart. How can he love her and not me? What does she see in him that she does not see in me?

Joe Jackson’s single Is She Really Going Out With Him? shares the incredulous feeling we experience when the person of our affection is sharing his or her love with someone else.

The opening line says it all…

Pretty women out walking with gorillas down my street.

Singing It Live

Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad Meat Loaf

Bat Out of Hell 1977

This song is one that comes full circle. In the beginning, Meat Loaf sings how he wants and needs the other person, but he can never love her,  but hey- two out of three ain’t bad.

It isn’t until after the song’s bridge that listeners find out that these very words were uttered to him years earlier by the only girl that he will ever love. In this song about unrequited love is one we can see and understand both sides of the sad love story.

This Brings Me back to Junior High School

Brandy (You’re a Fine Girl) Looking Glass

The Looking Glass 1972

This is such a sad song. Brandy falls in love with a sailor who tells her point blank that “his life, his love and his lady is the sea.”

Before he leaves, he gives her a gift.

Brandy wears a braided chain
Made of finest silver from the North of Spain
A locket that bears the name
Of the man that Brandy loves

Even though the other sailors at the bar where she works tell her that she could steal a sailor from the sea, the only one she couldn’t haunts her day and night.  When work is over, she walks around town, hoping that he will return.

One interesting fact-the title Brandy was based on the name of Randy, who was the lead singer’s high school sweetheart.

Have You Ever Needed Someone So Bad Def Leppard

Adrenelize 1992

In this Def Leppard mega hit, the band slows it down and sings a song with these haunting lyrics

Have you ever needed someone so bad?

Have you ever needed someone you just couldn’t have?

While the man in the song is in a relationship, the woman is emotionally distant. A wall that she put up cannot be broken down and no matter how hard he tries, he cannot connect and get the love he wants. He sings that he loves her so hard that his world just falls apart.

Emotionally Distant

Adrenelize 1992

I Can’t Make You Love Me Bonnie Raitt

Luck of the Draw 1991

This song is probably one of the saddest songs ever written. In fact, according to an interview in Spinner UK, the song’s producer, Don Was, shared that it was an electrically charged, emotional experience to watch Bonnie sing this in the recording studio. The session had to be stopped and some lyrics changed because she sobbed as she sang them, as she had such an incredible connection to the song.

The core of this song is knowing that a love has died, at least for one person in the relationship. This is their final night together, and she wants to make the most of the time they have left. Simply poignant.

Against All Odds (Take a Look at me Now) Phil Collins

Hits 1984

This Phil Collins song is from the movie Against All Odds. It was an okay film about an ex-football star who is hired to find the girlfriend of a nightclub owner. She has stolen his money and he wants it back. The investigator and the woman fall in love, and melodrama ensues.

This song was written by Phil Collins as he was going through is first divorce. It helped him sort through the pain he was going through at the time.

A Number 1 Hit for Phil

I Want You to Want Me Cheap Trick

Live at Budokan 1978

I want you to want me,

I need you to need me,

I’d love you to love me,

I’m begging you to beg me.

Yep, he has it bad and she just does not care. He goes on to sing all the things he will do for her if she would just love him.

The song was written for their first album, but cut before the final release.  It was then put on Cheap Trick’s second album and played it on tour but eventually dropped it. They decided to play it while in Japan, as the fans there loved the song, and the rest is history.

A Live Version

Always Bon Jovi

Cross Road 1994

This is a song that hits hard because the man in the song can never have the woman he loves back because he made a big mistake.

Now your pictures that you left behind
Are just memories of a different life
Some that made us laugh
Some that made us cry
One that made you have to say good bye

He sings that until the day he dies, he will always love her. It is bittersweet because he did have her love, but due to an indiscretion, he lost it.

Love the Song and the Video

Midnight Confessions The Grass Roots

Golden Grass 1968

Sometimes when we cannot have what we want, it pains us even more. And when you are in love with someone who is married to someone else, you cannot go around and tell people. It is wrong on so many levels.

But a little gold ring you wear on your hand,

That helps me to understand. There’s another before me, you’ll never be mine,

I’m wasting my time.

So the singer can only profess his love when he is alone at midnight.

This Song is Still Catchy

Invisible Clay Aiken

Measure of a Man 2003

The last song on this list shares the feelings of how it feels when you love someone else, but they do not know that you even exist…you are invisible.

I reach out
But you don’t even see me
Even when I scream out
Baby, you don’t hear me

If you read through all the lyrics it does have the feel of Sting’s Every Step You Take-he is tracing her every step-but it does not seem as creepy since the song is so uptempo. He is just in love and wishes that she would love him back.

I Enjoy This Song

Unrequited love is a universal human experience, which is why there are countless songs written about it and why we all can feel a connection to them.

What songs would you add to this list?

Popular Sitcoms From the 1970s

This page is a tribute to some classic tv sitcoms from the 1970s. The 1960s had been dominated by family friendly shows that largely appealed to kids.  Most of the humor from the 60s was slapstick or fantasy.   This completely changed in the next decade.

TV network executives decided by 1970 that they wanted to offer something different to viewers.  Shows like Green Acres and Beverly Hillbillies were still attracting large audiences, but most of them were children or older people. The networks were focused on attracting younger demographics as this is what advertisers wanted. This meant people in their 30s and 40s.

They made the controversial decision to cancel most of the 60s comedies that were still generating good ratings so that they could feature programs with more contemporary themes. As a result, they broadcast series like All in the Family and The Mary Tyler Moore Show, which went on to become icons that are still loved today.

The comedies of the 70s tackled subjects that had previously been taboo on television. The gamble paid off, as the majority of the programs turned out to be very successful. Many are still being shown on classic TV channels today.

All in the Family

All in the Family

Let’s start with one of the biggest sitcom hits from the 70s. All in the Family was the first program to finish as the top rated series for five consecutive seasons.  It regularly drew over 30 million viewers for each episode in the first few seasons.  Such ratings are unheard of now except for major events.

All in the Family was very funny but also controversial.  The creator of the series, Norman Lear, had to pitch it to more than one network.   CBS finally agreed to pick it up.  Mickey Rooney was offered the role of Archie, however the actor declined. He felt it was too risky to play such a character.

This series was the first to feature episodes about subjects that had not been featured on television before. Such topics as the Vietnam War, impotence, rape, and cancer  were included on the program.   All in the Family was targeted to an adult audience, and they loved it.

Archie was quite a complex person. He was hot tempered, bigoted, and had little patience with anyone who did not agree with his points of view. However, Archie was also a hard working man, and he deeply loved his wife and daughter. He really longed for the days of the 40s and 50s, when life was a lot simpler.

Edith was almost always subservient to Archie, even if she did not agree with a lot of his views. It was always memorable on those rare occasions when Edith stood up to him. One example was on the occasion of their 25th anniversary. Edith had secretly booked a room in the Atlantic City hotel room where they had spent their honeymoon. Archie has bought tickets for a ball game for the same weekend. Edith was forced to reveal her secret when she found out he was going to attend the game. Archie wanted her to cancel the reservation. She refused, and insisted they celebrate their anniversary by going to Atlantic City once again.  That was one of the few episodes where Archie showed a softer side.

Carroll O’Connor and Jean Stapleton were great actors.  Neither one of them were even remotely like the characters they portrayed so well.

The Mary Tyler Moore Show

Mary’s program was one of the first about a successful single woman who loved her career. Mary had a happy life and fulfilled life.   In that regard the show was considered ground breaking.  It was one of the most popular 70s sitcoms and was a staple on Saturday night.  Mary Tyler Moore ShowThere was no such thing as a DVR, so if you wanted to see the program you had to be home.

Mary and Rhoda became very good friends, even though they were opposites in many ways.  Initially the writers were going to have Rhoda’s character take a dislike to Mary. However, Mary Tyler Moore  was very popular,  having starred for many years as Laura Petrie in another successful series. The writers thought there could be a backlash. So although Rhoda’s first impression of Mary was not too favorable, she changed her mind very quickly.

Mary was  the level headed one at the WJM network.  Murray was most of the time, but he had his slip ups.  Mary could almost always be counted on to keep calm and help fix problems.

The biggest problem was usually Ted, who drove Lou and the others crazy on a regular basis. Over the years the supporting characters changed, which is typical for a long running series. One thing that remained consistent was the good writing and plausible storylines.

The Mary Tyler Moore Show returns to Me TV on January 1st and will air in the morning.

Rhoda

The character of Rhoda was very popular on Mary Tyler Moore.  CBS decided to take a chance by giving Valerie Harper her own show. It turned out to be a very successful program for the first two years.  Then  the writers made a bad decision by having Rhoda and Joe split up.  Valerie Harper as Rhoda

The writers thought a single Rhoda give them an opportunity to involve her in stories that were more interesting.  I disagree.  The ratings dropped when  the characters separated, and there was quite a backlash from viewers.

Rhoda’s sister Brenda was featured regularly on the show, along with her nosy and manipulative mother. There was continuity with the actress playing her mom, as Nancy Walker had appeared on MTM a few times. However, Brenda had never been previously mentioned.

The episode in which Rhoda married Joe happened a few weeks after the series began. It was the second highest rated TV episode ever at the time. Over 50 million people tuned in to watch. It still remains high on the list of most watched episodes.

Many people from MTM appeared at the wedding, including Mary herself, who was her closest Minneapolis friend. Rhoda had to run to catch the subway to make it to the ceremony, as Phyllis forgot to pick her up. She is seen running down the streets of New York in her wedding gown.  To this day it remains one of the most memorable sitcoms scenes.

Carlton the doorman was never seen, but he was heard on the intercom almost every episode. He often had too much to drink.  Carlton was wise cracking and sarcastic. The man who voiced Carlton later went on to do Garfield the cat.

The Opening Scene From Rhoda

Mary comes to the airport to say goodbye

The Bob Newhart Show

The Bob Newhart Show was part of a powerhouse Saturday evening line up of 1970s sitcoms. It was not an instant hit like All in the Family or Mary Tyler Moore, but the show built up a loyal audience over time.    Bob Newhart Show cast

This program did not win a single Emmy, even though it lasted for several seasons. Bob Newhart  featured a really good ensemble cast. Many of Bob’s patients were semi regulars.

Bob and Emily were very patient with Howard, the neighbor who  just walked into their apartment without knocking. Howard frequently had problems and he would seek Bob and Emily for advice.

There were some very memorable episodes. One of my favorites was when a few of Bob’s patients convinced him to hold a therapy session on TV. Another was Bob’s awkward appearance at Emily’s school to talk to her students.  Bob  found it very hard to relate to the young ones.  He had no children of his own and was used to relating only to adults.

Bob Newhart  has been on ME TV on and off for many years. Bob has appeared on the network in a series of witty and funny ads. Sadly Suzanne Pleshette died several years ago of cancer.

Threes Company

This series centered around room mates Janet, Chrissy and Jack. The landlords originally were the Ropers. They eventually left the program and were replaced by Mr Furley.  Threes Company cast

Many plots involved misunderstandings between the roommates and their outlandish schemes to solve problems. It was  slapstick comedy, and always hilarious. John Ritter was one of the best comedians in performing physical comedy.

Three’s Company had many cast changes. The Ropers were such a funny couple who were very popular with the audience.  This led to producers writing them out of Threes Company so they could star in their own TV series.  It was not successful however.   Much as I like Don Knotts, he wasn’t as good in this show as he had been playing Barney Fife.

Suzanne Somers abruptly left in a highly publicized dispute over her salary, and was replaced by Jennilee Harrison, and later Priscilla Barnes. The character of Larry was added.

For one season they also had Lana, an older woman who was crazy about Jack.   He did not feel the same way about her.

Jack did have many girlfriends, but the relationships he had with Janet and the other room mates always remained platonic. At the end of the series, Janet got married, Terri moved to Hawaii and Jack moved in with his girlfriend Vicki.

Threes Company  probably lasted a couple of years longer than it should have.  It wasn’t believable to have people that age so broke they had to keep living together for all of those years. However, it did remain a very funny program until the end.

Suzanne and Joyce DeWit, who played Janet, were estranged for many years due to Suzanne leaving the show.  They finally reconciled their differences a couple of years ago and are friendly again.  John Ritter tragically died suddenly many years ago.

Happy Days

This long lasting series resulted in stardom for Henry Winkler.  He made the character of Fonzie enormously popular.   The program did not anticipate Fonzi would be so well liked.  Ron Howard in Happy Days

He started as a minor character but that soon changed when it was apparent how much the audience loved him. Fonzie had been abandoned by his parents and was raised by a grandmother. He loved the Cunningham home, as it represented stability and a happy home life.

Mrs Cunningham was the only person who ever called him by his real name of Arthur. He was always Fonzie, or The Fonz, to everyone else.  Fonzi always affectionately  referred to her as Mrs. C.

The series presented an idealized version of life in the 50.  That made it pleasant to watch. The young people hung out at Arnold’s drive in.

Happy Days  introduced viewers Laverne and Shirley, who were spun off into their own successful series. Robin Williams appearance as Mork was so popular it led to the creation of the Mork and Mindy show.  This program was responsible for the spin off of three more successful 70s sitcoms.   The third one was Joani loves Chachi.   The show was set in Milwaukee, which was a first for a TV series.

Happy Days was Ron Howard’s last acting role. He left the series before it ended to start his highly successful directing career.

There were other highly popular 70s sitcoms in addition to those mentioned here.  MASH has been in reruns continuously since it ended.  Maude was a spinoff that was just as controversial as All in the Family.  The Jeffersons also were a spinoff and were highly rated for many years.

I don’t think they make sitcoms like this today.  Those shows were genuinely funny.
